The English Patient
Gabriel Yared

Hungarian folk music, 1930s jazz, a touch of Bach, and a haunting symphonic score by Gabriel Yared make up the stunning soundtrack to this wartime love story.

Set in Italy during World War II, the film tells the tale of a French-Canadian nurse who looks after a severely burned man known as 'The English Patient', as he refuses to reveal his real name. It's the first of many successful collaborations between Yared and director Anthony Minghella, who worked together to create music for a wide range of films, including Message in a Bottle, Possession, and Bon Voyage — but it's The English Patient that stands out as the finest example of their partnership. Yared won an Oscar and a Grammy Award for his brooding soundtrack, with its majestic soundscapes evoking the desolation and mystery of love in the desert.
