Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
A delicate gem of a song, composed late in Mozart's short life
Translating roughly as 'Evening sentiment', there's a distinctly dusky atmosphere to this little-known Mozart song.
The opening line of this song runs, 'It is evening, the sun has gone down, and the moon is shining silver.' That should put you in the right frame of mind for experiencing it.
Dainty melodies with an even daintier piano accompaniment are what dominates, with Mozart in an uncharacteristically restrained frame of mind. As the song winds towards a gentle, satisfying climax, the soloist sings, 'If thou too weepest but a teardrop for me, and pickest a violet onto my grave, look gently down on me', which has to be one of the more sombre moments in Mozart's entire catalogue.
