Bryn Terfel’s career was launched back in 1989 when he and Dmitri Hvorostovsky fought it out at Cardiff Singer of the World in what became known as the ‘Battle of the Baritones’.

Hvorostovsky ended up taking the main prize but Bryn took the competition’s prestigious song prize. Both singers have been household names ever since.

Bryn released his first solo album on Deutsche Grammophon in 1996 – Something Wonderful: Bryn Terfel sings Rodgers & Hammerstein – and he’s continued to cherry pick his favourite music from a huge variety of different genres in his recordings ever since.

The full title of this album is ‘Bryn Terfel sings Popular Favourites’ and it includes music by Bizet as well as Welsh folk songs and traditional American songs.
