Whimsical, melancholic and long-lasting — Alan Silvestri's score is just like the reputation of Forrest Gump himself, but it falls two places in the 2014 chart.
Alan Silvestri is often at home composing for the stories of larger-than-life characters, achieving great success with brilliant scores for Robert Zemeckis's previous efforts Romancing the Stone and the Back to the Future trilogy, so it's appropriate that he was chosen to write the music for Forrest Gump, the uplifting story of the slow-witted Forrest played by Tom Hanks. Silvestri's lengthy score tugs at the heartstrings much like everything else in the film, and sits alongside a selection of classic pop hits from the 1950s-80s.
